When all else has failed – whether it is between housemates, your landlord or the Real Estate Agent – try mediation as a way to resolve your disputes. Conciliators and Mediators are an impartial third party that can be brought in if all parties agree, and assist in finding a solution that might suit everyone. They do not impose decisions, they simply try and facilitate a solution.
- The RTA has a Dispute Resolution Service which offers information about tenancy law, a telephone shuttle negotiation service, and conciliation conferences. This service can assist you with conflicts with your lessor (or head tenant) but does not offer dispute resolution for tenant vs tenant disputes. Phone the RTA on 1300 366 311 for more information.
- Dispute Resolution Centre (DRC) - provides a free, confidential and impartial mediation service to the community. It’s an alternative way of settling disputes before they get to court. Trained mediators help the parties in a dispute to reach an agreement. The DRC provides mediators. For more information Tel: (07) 3239 6269. This service could assist you with mediating a situation with your housemates.
