Sustainability

sustainability initiatives

The new Science and Engineering Centre will transform QUT's contribution to the needs of Australia's emerging green workforce and to research and development solutions for pressing global issues, such as climate change and global sustainability.

With a theme of sustainable and secure infrastructure, the centre will establish QUT's cross-faculty response to issues formed at the intersection of:

  • greenhouse emissions
  • energy consumption
  • land use
  • systems integration
  • construction
  • sensor technologies
  • materials.

A sustainable development

The Science and Engineering Centre is registered for Green Star ratings in “Education Design” and “As Built”, and is aiming for a 5-star Green Star rating.

Achieving this will make it one of the highest rated "green" buildings in the Brisbane CBD.

A project sustainability group has been established to oversee the design and ensure the centre not only achieves the 5-star rating but that it also represents high quality sustainable architecture.

The QUT community has already provided input in this area and more feedback is welcome from staff and students with innovative ideas that could be put to use. Please email Gary Rasmussen, the communications project manager.

QUT's commitment to sustainability

QUT is committed to being sustainable in everything that it does.

As an organisation, QUT is committed to addressing the important environmental issues and challenges currently facing the university, specifically in the areas of:

  • water
  • waste and recycling
  • environmental risk management
  • transport
  • energy use
  • QUT and Australian Technology Network (ATN) commitments.

Sustainability at QUT will provide further details.
