Project overview

In 2008 QUT announced ambitious plans to establish a new $230 million Science and Engineering Centre in the heart of our CBD Gardens Point campus.

Our aim is to create a world-leading centre for the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to research and develop solutions for climate change, global sustainability and Australia's emerging green workforce needs.

Located adjacent to the recently renovated historic Old Government House, the new centre will involve the dramatic redevelopment of our Gardens Point campus.

Plans entail the demolition of five buildings and provision for new facilities for education and research. New works include:

  • Two multi-storey towers
  • Stimulating learning and research spaces
  • Exciting food and retail spaces
  • New 50-metre swimming pool and gym
  • Large public forecourt to the Old Government House Centre
  • Pedestrian link from Goodwill Bridge to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.

Associated early works take in a multi-million dollar upgrade of existing campus laboratories.

Sustainability will be a guiding principle in all designs and construction.

Project costs for the development, which is due for completion in 2012, will be paid from:

  • Commonwealth Government $75m (Education Investment Fund)
  • Queensland Government $35m (Smart State Research Facilities Fund)
  • The Atlantic Philanthropies $25m
  • Community Facilities Fund $17 million (QUT Student Guild/QUT)
  • Remaining funds by QUT
