L Block on Gardens Point campus has had a rapid makeover.
The highly visible L Block is now swathed in a building "wrap" that carries an artist's impression of the university's $230 million Science Technology Centre and Community Hub, now under construction.
The planned centre will provide world-class work spaces for research in science, technology, engineering and maths, as well as the latest technology-rich social learning spaces.
It will also become a social hub for the university and the wider community, as it will be equipped with a gym, vibrant restaurants and cafes and a 50m pool. The centre is due to open in mid 2012.

| Main Drive works update |
|
|
|
Works along Main Drive continue, with the focus now on an area outside the George Street entrance of Gardens Point campus on the opposite side to A block.
Works are also progressing on the Substation 101 located beside A Block as part of an extensive upgrade to accommodate additional electrical loads for the new centre.

| Learning with Leighton Contractors |
 |
|
QUT students now have the opportunity to be actively involved with the centre during the design and construction phase.
A joint initiative between QUT and the centre builders Leighton Contractors has been established to offer work integrated learning to undergraduate students and provide an engagement program for staff and the wider QUT community.
Current urban development students Ryan Alwi and Natasha Jackson, pictured left to right, have been awarded undergraduate internships on the project, and started on the job in January this year.
Other activities being developed in conjunction with faculties, and due to commence from semester one, include lectures by Leightons, site visits for students and staff, professional development opportunities for QUT staff, and participation in schools programs.

Second crane in place

As bulk earth works continue, a second crane has been established at the X Block end of the Science and Engineering Centre site, with a third crane planned for installation this month (March).
The removal of some 70,000 cubic metres of soil is almost complete.

| Lab works still underway |
The laboratory upgrade projects in blocks E, M, Q and R and new research student space in H block are due for completion progressively through semester one.
These upgrades will provide high quality laboratories for student use and research across a wide range of science disciplines.
Researchers will be accommodated in the heritage listed H block being renovated to maximise the potential of one of our historic buildings.
